The crazy thing is that melodies don't carry much of the emotion power at all. The emotions are driven from the chords, bassline, and other stuff that is going on around the melody. In this video, you will see me construct a melody that sounds a bit bland on its own. Notice that as I add chords, bass, and other stuff, the melody begins to come to life. Melodies only sound like the weakest supporting element that plays with them. This means that if your melody is strong and the chords are weak, your melody will sound weak. The same goes for if you have a strong melody but a weak instrument or synth is playing that melody. You always want strong sound selection and strong supporting elements to get the most emotion out of your melodies.
