Benford's Law - How mathematics can detect fraud!

UPDATE 11-11-2020 Hi all, this video is currently being shared in relation to the 2020 USA election. Benford's Law applies when the dataset is a form of geometic growth over several orders of magnitude, such as the lengths of rivers. So would Benford's Law apply to an election? Here is a great video by Matt Parker explaining why we would not expect the first digit of election returns to follow Benford's Law https://youtu.be/etx0k1nLn78 Some are currently citing the work of Walter Mebane as an example of Benford's law being applied to elections. Mebane's method is a test based on the second digits of election results. (Rather than the first digits). If you have heard of Benford's law being applied to elections, that is probably referring to Mebane's work. Mebane's own analysis of the 2020 election is now here http://www-personal.umich.edu/~wmebane/inapB.pdf and does not support evidence of fraud in the 2020 election. Note that Mebane says "The first-digit distribution has nothing whatsoever to do with any kind of election fraud." Mebane's test on the second digits of elections is not universally accepted. One paper that disagrees (or at least advises caution) is this paper (https://core.ac.uk/download/pdf/206427437.pdf) from the California Institute of Technology. The paper simulated an election and found the test to be unreliable: "labeling a free and fair vote as fraudulent 34% of the time and... labeling a fraudulent election as free and fair 60% of the time." Their conclusion was that, since Benford's Law proved to be unreliable in a simple simulation, you should be extra cautious about applying it to a complicated, real, election. (1998) Here's a list of papers http://www.benfordonline.net/list/chronological ----------- This law was first notice in 1881 by the astronomer Simon Newcomb, then again in 1938 by the physicist Frank Benford. They both noticed that the starting digits of a lot of real world statistics do not appear evenly but follow a logarithmic distribution, for example this would mean numbers that start with a 1 appear over 30% of the time. A quick appeal to intuition will show this is true for data that grows exponentially (geometrically). If something grows by some multiplication factor, you will soon see that the distribution is logarithmic, i.e. that numbers starting with a 1 appear 30% of the time. This explains the law for a lot of things that grow in this way, like prices and populations. Yet this law also appears in other types of growth, including factorials and Fibonacci numbers. However, remarkably, this law also describes what happens when you take data randomly from a variety of sources, such as you might do if you took numbers from a newspaper. Although this data comes from a variety of distributions, not just from exponential growth but many other distributions, yet still follows Benford's Law. Although Benford observed this fact in his original paper, it was not proven until 1995 by Ted Hill. However, you can still prove Benford's Law without knowing this. If we can assume Benford's Law exists, then it must be scale invariant, i.e. it would not matter which units we choose to make our measurements in - kilometres, miles, feet, centimetres or whatever. As I prove in this video, the only distribution that is scale invariant must be the logarithmic distribution. Hence Benford's Law is logarithmic. This proof was first put forward by Roger Pinkham in 1961. In 1992, Mark Nigrini wrote his PhD thesis on the detection of income tax invasion using Bedford's Law, and his ideas are applied in the detection of fraud. We see Benford's Law in observational data because real data can be a complex mix of many distributions and because it is the distribution achieved when data is repeatedly multiplied, divided, or raised to integer powers. And, once achieved, the distribution persists under further multiplication, division, and raising to integer powers.

Rental Market Apocalypse Trigger A Housing Crisis: Prepare Your Self For The Worst!

The rental market collapse is not only putting families at risk of eviction as it is contributing to the permanent closures of several stores and leading U.S. shopping malls to bankruptcy. As the economy awaits another stimulus package, unemployed workers drowning in debt don't find the means to meet their rental payments, consumer spending continues to critically decline making several businesses delinquent on their leases, and leaving mall owners in a dangerous position. The more the delivery of further federal assistance is postponed the more store closures are increasing the risk for shopping malls to become bankrupt. This week, two major U.S. malls have already filed for bankruptcy, and economists are fearing that an explosion of debt on the rental market may trigger a commercial real state and residential housing apocalypse of unprecedented proportions. In this video, we discuss the many decisive factors building up the rental market crisis. The housing market is in big trouble due to the lack of federal aid to ease the effects of the economic collapse. Market analysts outline that commercial real estate and residential housing have enormous capitulation risks, which will add massive pressure on the next stock market crash. A recent study found that up to 40 million people risk missing rent. Researchers indicated that the United States may be facing the most severe housing crisis in its history, while executives in the real estate and housing sectors argued that the longer the federal government waits to act, the steeper the financial cliff that renters will be pushed off when the eviction moratorium expires this winter. Meanwhile, a recent analysis showed that in 25 major US cities, over 50% are at risk of facing a housing market bubble. Renters and tenants coping with hardships, combined with a looming correction in home values, could weigh heavily on the housing market. Landlords are having to deal with huge amounts of default, which means renters then will be on the hook for months of missed payments, meaning that mass evictions, permanent business closures, and more bankruptcies are expected to happen shortly, and its consequences are likely to bleed over the broader economy. The outstanding rent debt could reach $7.2 billion before the close of 2020, and the total rent debt could reach nearly $70 billion by year-end if there is no additional stimulus spending, with nearly 12.8 million Americans owing an average of $5,400 from missed payments. Although the larger figure is far smaller than the 2007 subprime-mortgage bubble burst, this time around, tens of millions of people are going to be caught in a web of home-rental debt and eviction rates can be much higher. However, the problem doesn't stop right there. As many renters relied on credit cards to afford their payments, the total national rent debt is probably far larger than what can be counted from missed payments alone. This relocation of debt from landlord to plastic can harm renters’ credit long term by using too much of their available credit line, which can lower scores. Renters that have previously arranged alternative payment plans with their landlords month are now falling behind on their settlements, and some landlords have been adding punitive late fees on top of what is already owed, so their debt is becoming much higher than just the face value of the rent. That is to say, the multibillion-dollar rent debt added to the fast-climbing credit card debt could put a large burden of uncollectible debt on bank balance sheets, which will restrict their ability to lend, and consequently, undermine the credit of landlords. On top of that, commercial properties have been experiencing growing hardships as the considerable decline in consumer spending at brick-and-mortar retail stores continues to compromise the livelihood of retailers in shopping malls, and thereby, jeopardizing mall owners' ability to pay for their commercial mortgage and stay in business too. Last week, CBL & Associates and Pennsylvania Real Estate Investment Trust have filed for bankruptcy, seeking protection from creditors. Together the two properties account for some 87 million square feet of real estate nationwide. Both companies mentioned how the current recession has hurt their tenants, and, in turn, their own businesses. Others are expected to follow, since a recent survey showed shopping centers and malls rank as the most-avoided public places among consumers, and despite the coming holiday season, 55.4% of those polled said they would avoid shopping at malls, which means our economy will still experience a lot of turbulence before the year ends. The organ of the Cathedral of Berlin represents the highpoint of Sauer’s career. At the same time, it marks the end of the long development of Romantic orchestral organs, whose sound corresponds to the characteristic sound of a symphonic orchestra of that period. First, you need money. How much depends on what options you have. If you don’t have money, google “community development corporation in your area. Like Ventura Community Development Corporation. Ask what type of “Down payment assistance programs they have. A client of mine bought a $250,000 property with $750 out of pocket because they qualified for a state grant. All you have to do is ask for down payment assistance. Step 2: Get qualified for a loan. You can do 3.5% down as an FHA loan which lets you have a bit higher Debt and lower credit score. Or you can do 3-5% down as a conventional loan. If you just graduated college and just got a job, you might be able to qualify with 2 years work experience already. Otherwise you need at least 1 tax return at your job and year to date income statements. Yes, you’ll pay mortgage insurance, but watch this video on mortgage insurance to learn why you SHOULD pay mortgage insurance. It’s stupid not to. Ask your lender quote “preunderwrite your loan” to be more competitive. Step 3: Find an agent that knows the neighborhood you’re looking in. Go to zillow’s agent finder and look for an agent IN your zip code, ideally within the neighborhoods you want to buy in. Step 4: Find a single family house, or a condo but condos are harder, that’s dated and stinky. Ask your agent, who better be really good at selling houses in that neighborhood, what common issues are and what common costs are with the house you’re buying. Step 5: Write a competitive offer. You’re going to be against multiple offers. If you’re not, that’s a bad sign. You’re probably looking at something over priced if you’re not against other offers. The more you know going into the deal about the sellers motivations and the condition of the property the better. If you can s shorten your inspection contingency to 3 days do it. If you can shorten your loan contingency and waive an appraisal contingency, do it. Do not ask for credit backs and not complicate your offer asking for nonsense like termite repairs or warranties if you don’t have to. VA buyers might have to. But otherwise, keep your offer clean in this environment. You’re goal is to find a place listed for let’s say $200,000. It’ll get bid up. Fine. Say you pay $250,000 for a house that’s sitting in a $350,000 neighborhood. You’re goal is to leave the walls, don’t move structural stuff, and, leave as much as freaking possible. If you don’t have money, do the bare minimums! I used to scrub floor tiles to save them because I had no money. If you have money, spend in cost effective ways. Glaze the tubs, paint the walls, carpet the floor, paint the cabinets, change the knobs and spend as little money as possible to make that place livable. The point is: you now control a property that’s livable in a $350,000 neighborhood. But you just spent $250,000 buying it and let’s say $20k for fix up and closing costs. Your equity, your net worth, now increased by $80,000. Step 6: In the future, when you’re ready, refinance the property. Would I be able to start from scratch and become a multi-millionaire again? The short answer is yes I would and not only do i think i could do it i also would say its possible to achieve in half the time or less! My first move would be getting the highest paid job possible if this is minimum wage working in McDonalds, Walmart or anything like that then that will be fine. The only purpose of this job is to establish an income stream. Without money it’s very hard to accomplish anything, instead of thinking of it as a drug I will be using it as a fuel to propel me towards my goals. My second move would be to establish a side hustle or side job of some sort. Back when I was younger I used to catch and sell fish but the times have moved on. Selling fish door to door from a shopping cart may not be seen as hygienic any more but I had great fun catching them and selling them was just a bonus ! Online marketing would be the number one high income skill I would want to learn. The best way for me to do that and make some money on the side would be to set up a drop shipping store. Dropshipping is when you take a product from a supplier, market and advertise it online and then get the supplier to ship it directly without ever physically touching the item. Running a profitable drop shipping store requires you to learn the basics of business, how to run ads on social media, how to build a website, copywriting, graphic design and in some cases video editing. Build an emergency Fund - This is a savings account with 3-5 months of my living expenses. Open a vanguard account and start consistently investing into low cost index funds like the s&p 500 which is a collection of the top 500 companies in the USA. By starting at such a young age I would be able to take advantage of compound interest. My third move would be building a strong network of connections. An important part of this would be finding a few mentors to help guide me. I would do this by using social media to grow my personal brand and documenting my journey. My fourth move would happen the day I turn 18 and it would be getting a credit card. A credit card has so many benefits including protection on purchases, points you can use for free travel, cashback and most importantly building your credit score. My 5th move is when things start to really come together. I would use the money, skills and connections I had been building to start a scalable business once I had identified a gap in the market, most likely within an online or software niche. Once my business was able to support itself and it was making me money on almost auto-pilot It would be time for my 6th move, diversify and focus on my personal portfolio. 50% of my portfolio would consist of Real Estate. As rental properties can generate income all year round. The rental income is great and will pay off the mortgage but the increase in value of the property is generally fantastic if you buy right. 25% of my portfolio would be in index funds this will allow me to keep growing my wealth with the stock market. Pension accounts would make up 10%. The truth is the word may be old but they are one of the most tax efficient best long term investments you are likely to make and the younger you start the better. 12% would consist of Investing my money into businesses seeking investment. This would be a lot like you see on dragons den and shark tank in return for a percentage of their business I would offer my money, mentoring and network of connections. I like this type of investment as it allows me to use my business skills to influence the success of my investment which investing in the stock market can’t give me! I would use 2.5% of my portfolio to dabble in individual stocks. This is the money I can afford to lose AND HAVE A BIT OF FUN WITH. I would reserve 0.5% for the most risky investment bitcoin. This is just an investment you can make that covers a WIDE variety of stocks or markets - and you can buy a small piece of that for a very low price. You can make passive income two ways - the first is through the stock price going up over time, and the second is through their DIVIDENDS. Second, we’ve got another method for earning a LITTLE more passive income if you want to take a little more risk - and would be through buying individual dividend stocks. BUT…as with anything…with reward comes risk…so, the more money you have the potential of making…the more you have the potential of LOSING….and even though a stock might have a high dividend, it doesn’t guarantee the price of the stock won’t end up going down if the company doesn’t perform well. So, keep that in mind and invest safely in companies with strong fundamentals - all of this is meant to be a long term investment. THIRD….another way you can invest $500 for passive income is by buying a REIT. Think of this one like, instead of buying a stock in a company like I just mentioned earlier…you’re buying a stock in a real estate portfolio. Real estate investment trusts basically pool money from investors, buy up properties within a certain category, and then pay out a portion of their rental profit as a dividend. The FOURTH way you can make passive income by investing $500 is by paying off high interest rate debt. Consider this like you’re #1 investing decision if you have any interest rate above 5% or so that isn’t a tax write off….PAY IT DOWN WITH $500. HOWEVER…If you also have TIME on your hands and you want to take a very ACTIVE role in making WAYYYYYY more money with $500 - there are a few other options: The first way you can invest your $500 is to go after sign up bonuses. Both credit cards and banks will give you a “bonus” for opening an account with them and meeting some minimum requirements…usually, that bonus is anywhere from $50 to $200, and it usually takes about 30 minutes of work to complete. The next way to make passive income by investing your TIME alongside with $500 is…oh man…you know I’m going to say it…. making a YouTube channel. I still maintain that this CAN be a great way to make money IF you have a passion for talking to yourself…alone in a room…in front of a camera…and then getting frustrated when your editing software freezes and crashes…but if you can handle that and stick with it, YouTube CAN be more rewarding than your wildest imagination. From there, you can sell a product or a service that doesn’t involve any further time on your end…for example, I created a program called The YouTube Creator Academy. Even though it took a LOT of work upfront and a LOT of trial and error to get something to the point where it was worthy of selling it…NOW, it runs on its own, and will likely continue running on its own for the foreseeable future. You could expand your passive income sources through blogs, websites, and so on through affiliate marketing. This is the practice in which you are marketing someone else’s product, and you get paid a commission every time you get a sale. The last way you can make passive income with $500 is to use that towards creating an online business that you can eventually run on autopilot - or without a lot of time on your end. Using this money towards something like THIS would be a fantastic use of your time…and, the experience you get from a $500 will help you in so many other areas of your life beyond just this.
