Colin Hay ~ Overkill - Lyrics

Colin Hay, formerly of Men at Work (hence the play on words in the title of the album on which this was performed, Man @ Work), has an exceptional gift for playing the acoustic versions of these, for me, long forgotten 80's hits that I remember but hadn't heard in ages. The new spin on the old sound with the use of minimal electronic anything and some interesting additions create a fresh new sound with lyrics you just happen to know. This song, though not one of my favorites by Men at Work, is officially my favorite by Hay, who penned most of the songs for the group. I love this acoustic version, find the lyrics to be deep and meaningful, and have put this together as a tribute to the new sound that I've just found. Enjoy!

But none the less, this is a history lesson of a different genre of Dance Music. "I couldn't find any decent mixes of this era of Garage. Only the ultra cheesy commercial pop music that was about around the millennium. The tracks in this mix were the basis for that explosion of Craig David, So Solid, Artful Dodger etc. This is part of my history in dance music, that I will treasure forever - it's dedicated to those that were there at the time, yet I hope some people just getting into dance music and hearing these tracks for the first time can understand and appreciate the feel good emotion it brings, and reasoning why." Life, The Universe and Douglas Adams

If Hitchhiker is a must-see for the dedicated fan, so much more so is a new film biography of Douglas Adams entitled Life, the Universe, and Douglas Adams. While a shorter bio and tribute appear on the second DVD of the Hitchhiker release, this is a full length look at the life and work of Douglas Adams. This film, by Joel Greengrass and Rick Mueller, explores the details of Adams' life in a warm, funny, loving way. Life is sentimental but never mushy and, while an obvious tribute to the man, it never becomes one of those insipid eulogies that seem to sprout overnight like fungi whenever a celebrity passes on. This is a realistic look at a real live human being from the points of view of those who knew him best. Interviews with Adams' early teachers and comedy partners and friends, including Mary Allen, Terry Jones, and Berkeley Breathed and sister Jane Garnier, are interspersed with previously filmed interviews with Douglas Adams himself, as well as film clips of Adams giving lectures... and even video of Adams on vacation. Wonderful pop-up style factoids appear onscreen at opportune moments, and a Babelfish translates British English (batting=driving about aimlessly) for clueless Americans. Readers of The Salmon of Doubt will find much of this film familiar. Many of the incidents recounted here are mentioned in Adams' own writing, compiled posthumously in Salmon. We see film footage of Adams, a passionate defender of endangered species, hiking in Africa wearing a rhinoceros suit. Mark Carwardine, Adams' collaborator on Last Chance to See, speaks of their travels. Adams himself speaks about his fascination with animals and nature. We learn where "42" came from, and when Adams first discovered the importance of having a towel on hand at all times. As I mentioned, this is a film about a real human being, foibles and all. Mary Allen remembers Adams "exuberant, overenthusiastic" reaction to his early success...enthusiasm which led to him crashing his first Porsche! An extended section of the film discusses his insecurities, an issue that was probably at the heart of his legendary inability to meet deadlines (though Adams claimed he simply "loved the whooshing sound they made as they went by"). But this is also a film about a loving, caring, truly good man. The Douglas Adams pictured here was funny, witty, brilliant, and above all, kind. Friend Kanwal Sharma recounts how he seemed to always find himself upgraded to first class when he traveled; only later did he discover that Douglas was arranging the upgrades behind the scenes. Perhaps the most telling feature of this film is the warmth and joy that radiates from each speaker as they remember Adams. Though his work was incomparable, this film makes it clear that his legacy was something far more important. I should mention especially that Neil Gaiman is a fantastic choice as narrator of Life, the Universe, and Douglas Adams . The best documentaries are often ruined by dry, dull narration but there is no hint of that here. Gaiman is as warm and funny as the subject of the movie is and his voice draws the viewer instantly into the film. I was captivated from the very beginning. Fans of Douglas Adams will want to watch this film again and again. Even better, those not familiar with Douglas Adams will learn a thing or two about being an all around decent human being, and ultimately they'll want to watch this film again and again, too. I smiled and laughed all the way through this movie, even through occasional tears. See this film when you need a good laugh, and a good cry. Rapper's Delight - The Sugarhill Gang (1979)

"Rapper's Delight" was a 1979 single by American hip-hop trio The Sugarhill Gang. While it was not the first single to feature rapping, it is generally considered to be the song that first popularized hip-hop in the United States and around the world. The song was ranked #248 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time, and #2 on VH1's 100 Greatest Hip-Hop Songs. In late 1979, Debbie Harry of the group Blondie suggested that Chic's Nile Rodgers join her and Chris Stein at a hip-hop event, which at the time was a communal space taken over by teenagers with boom box stereos playing various pieces of music that performers would break dance to. Rodgers experienced this event the first time himself at a high school in the Bronx. A few weeks later, Blondie, The Clash and Chic were playing a gig in New York at Bonds nightclub. When Chic started playing "Good Times", rapper Fab Five Freddy and what were the original members of The Sugarhill Gang jumped up on stage and started rapping freestyle with the band. A few weeks later Rodgers was on the dance floor of New York club LaViticus and heard the DJ play a song which opened with Bernard Edwards' bass line from Chic's "Good Times". Rodgers approached the DJ who said he was playing a record he had just bought that day in Harlem. The song turned out to be an early version of "Rapper's Delight", which also included a scratched version of the song's string section. Rodgers and Edwards immediately threatened legal action over copyright issues, which resulted in a settlement and them being credited as co-writers. Rodgers admitted that he was originally upset with the song, but would later declare it to be "one of [his] favorite songs of all time", also saying that "as innovative and important as 'Good Times' was, 'Rapper's Delight' was just as much, if not more so." "Rapper's Delight" hit #36 on the U.S. pop charts, and #4 on the U.S. R&B chart. In 1979 it became the first hip-hop single to go gold. The following year, the song was the anchor of the group's first album "The Sugarhill Gang". It was the first Top 40 song to be available only as a 12-inch extended version in the U.S., and no U.S. 7-inch, 45-RPM record was made. In Europe, however, it was released on the classic 7-inch single format, with a shorter version of the song. The original members, all from Englewood, New Jersey, called themselves Wonder Mike (born Michael Anthony Wright on April 30, 1957), Big Bank Hank a.k.a. 'Imp the Dimp' (born 1956 as Henry Jackson) and Master Gee (born Guy O'Brien in 1963). They were assembled into a group by producer Sylvia Robinson who also founded Sugar Hill Records, along with her husband, the record mogul Joe Robinson. It Takes Two - Rob Base & DJ E-Z Rock (1988)

"It Takes Two" was a 1988 hip-hop song by Rob Base & DJ E-Z Rock, the title track from their debut album, produced by Teddy Riley and later certified platinum. The song sampled heavily from Lyn Collins' 1972 song "Think (About It)", using multiple drum breaks, the well-known "Woo! Yeah!" sample, as well as the lyric sung by Collins which gave "It Takes Two" its title. The famous introduction of the song was spoken over a sample of "Space Dust" by The Galactic Force Band (1978). "It Takes Two" first became a regional hit and then slowly climbed the Billboard Hot 100, eventually topping the chart and picking up a multi-platinum single certification. The song also peaked at #3 on the Hot Dance Music/Club Play chart. Rob Base & DJ E-Z Rock are a hip-hop duo from Harlem, New York. The duo consists of Rob Base (aka Robert Ginyard) and DJ E-Z Rock (aka Rodney 'Skip' Bryce). In 2008, their song "It Takes Two" was ranked number 37 on VH1's 100 Greatest Songs of Hip-Hop. Five Minutes Of Funk - Whodini (1984)

"Five Minutes Of Funk" was a hit single from "Escape", the second album by hip-hop group Whodini, released in 1984 on the Jive label. In 1998, the album was selected as one of The Source's 100 Best Rap Albums. Whodini is a hip-hop group that was formed in 1981. The Brooklyn, New York-based trio consisted of vocalist and main lyricist Jalil Hutchins (one of the few rappers at the time to go by his real name), co-vocalist John Fletcher aka Ecstasy (who wore a Zorro-style hat as his trademark), and turntable artist DJ Drew Carter aka Grandmaster Dee. Whodini was among the very first hip-hop groups to cultivate a high-profile national following for hip-hop music and made significant inroads on urban radio. As they were contemporaries of other hip-hop groups such as the Fat Boys, Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five, and Afrika Bambaataa, the group was managed by Russell Simmons, brother of Joseph 'Run' Simmons of Run-D.M.C.. The group signed with London-based independent record label Jive Records in 1982. They enjoyed a string of hits for several years, mostly charting on Urban and R&B radio stations. The bulk of production on their releases was done by Larry Smith, a bass player who also handled much of Run-D.M.C.'s early work. In keeping with the 1980s trend, Whodini's albums tended to be synthesizer-driven with a heavy electronic drumbeat. The sampling technology that became identified with many hip-hop songs and with many bands was barely prominent in its music, and subsequently, the group never fully relied on it to create its sound. The group's music consisted mostly of original compositions. This channel is dedicated to all the great rap music from back in the day. Paul McCartney Mull Of Kintyre Lyric Mull of kintyre Oh mist rolling in from the sea, My desire is always to be here Oh mull of kintyre Far have I traveled and much have I seen Dark distant mountains with valleys of green. Past painted deserts the sunsets on fire As he carries me home to the mull of kintyre. Mull of kintyre Oh mist rolling in from the sea, My desire is always to be here Oh mull of kintyre [ Lyrics from: http://www.lyricsfreak.com/p/paul+mccartney/mull+of+kintyre_20105667.html ] Sweep through the heather like deer in the glen Carry me back to the days I knew then. Nights when we sang like a heavenly choir Of the life and the time of the mull of kintyre. Mull of kintyre Oh mist rolling in from the sea, My desire is always to be here Oh mull of kintyre Smiles in the sunshine And tears in the rain Still take me back to where my memories remain Flickering embers growing higher and higher As they carry me back to the mull of kintyre Mull of kintyre Oh mist rolling in from the sea, My desire is always to be here Oh mull of kintyre Mull of kintyre Oh mist rolling in from the sea, My desire is always to be here Oh mull of kintyre

Lady Sovereign - Blah Blah

Lyrics... I think? I see your first priorities are discussing me in Maccy D's at about half three, While you're munching on your quarter-pounder with cheese, Chatting about me and my abilities, Like S-O-V you're Shit, S-O-V can't spit, S-O-V just quit, Ahh, whatever don't talk with your mouth full bitch, While your discussing me its all publicity, Even if you're cussing me you're still dashing my name around the city, it's all good though, publicity for free, White midget, uh huh mic fidget, Somebody just dialed my digit, S-O-V you're no one, hmm is it? Flattered by the way you use your credit, you fed it and you said it that I'm nobody, If I'm nobody then why are you ringing me? You drained your credit that's killing it, Well my style you sure you aren't feeling it? [Chorus] Blah, blah, blah blah, blah, blah, blah, blah in one ear and it comes straight out the other Repeating yourself like you got a stutter with all you mutter like reh reh reh reh rah Blah, blah, blah blah, blah, blah, blah, blah all your words in my brain are turning into clutter Repeating yourself like you got a stutter with all you mutter like reh reh reh reh rah People wanna classify me as an Eminem, but hear what I'm a different kinda specimen, Just because I be a white caucasian, doesn't mean me and him are the same Because one I'm not American 2 I'm not a man 3 I'm coming through with a different kinda plan, Setting the facts straight cause I know that I can Purely heavyweight cause I do the whole shebang. Categories I don't fit into any, I'm on so many styles I'm on many, Writing up more lines than burberry and dealing with beats like a victim of a bully. Make you drink my saliva off the floor the spit I pat when I walked in the door released my metaphor. like cor blimey its That white girl S-O-V! [Chorus] I know you don't boast about me over your Sunday roast or mid-morning cheese on toast. But when I find out you've been talking you start squawking S-O-V I never said that, S-O-V you know you ain't wack, S-O-V I love your track, What the fuck do you want bitch a pat on the back, A blahbarian equals a soon to be beg-friend, Cause a beg-friend is an ex-blahbarian, And they only start caring. When you're preparing a next big riddim that every deck is blaring. "oh fuck" I got posh people swearing, The rich, the poor, the snobs the whores, Oh dear blahbarians galore! [Chorus]

Joe Jackson - Steppin' Out (extended video)

I love this song and wanted to experience the video with the LP version, which includes what I think are two of the best parts of the song. I may add to the description later about all the things I did, but most of all, I want everyone to experience a classy song and a classy video. This is an update for those interested: At the time I uploaded this video, I couldn't find a version of "Steppin Out" I was happy with to share, so I decided to find a decent video, make it sound good, and upload it. I always preferred the album version, so I "cross faded" the single version into the album version at the beginning to make it clean without the end of "Target." With the video, I cleaned up a couple of spots where the frames were damaged by doing "slow downs," making it as unnoticeable as possible. In order to make the beginning and end longer, I used the existing video to make "stills" and effects. And to those of you who subscribe to my channel, thank you. If we all love this song, then I hope you enjoy other music that I upload. I uploaded one of my own Latin Pop "Night and Day" inspired originals called "Tito Gato" which you can find on my YouTube channel (performed by a hot six piece band on acoustic instruments). Stay tuned for more uploads! :) Feel free to "friend" me on Facebook. https://www.facebook.com/fingerjazz

Propaganda Terms in the Media and What They Mean - Noam Chomsky

The United States and the Soviet Union both used propaganda extensively during the Cold War. More Chomsky: https://www.amazon.com/gp/search?ie=UTF8&tag=tra0c7-20&linkCode=ur2&linkId=942ec177434aa786666a6d7163422823&camp=1789&creative=9325&index=books&keywords=noam%20chomsky Both sides used film, television, and radio programming to influence their own citizens, each other, and Third World nations. The United States Information Agency operated the Voice of America as an official government station. Radio Free Europe and Radio Liberty, which were, in part, supported by the Central Intelligence Agency, provided grey propaganda in news and entertainment programs to Eastern Europe and the Soviet Union respectively. The Soviet Union's official government station, Radio Moscow, broadcast white propaganda, while Radio Peace and Freedom broadcast grey propaganda. Both sides also broadcast black propaganda programs in periods of special crises. In 1948, the United Kingdom's Foreign Office created the IRD (Information Research Department), which took over from wartime and slightly post-war departments such as the Ministry of Information and dispensed propaganda via various media such as the BBC and publishing. The ideological and border dispute between the Soviet Union and People's Republic of China resulted in a number of cross-border operations. One technique developed during this period was the "backwards transmission," in which the radio program was recorded and played backwards over the air. (This was done so that messages meant to be received by the other government could be heard, while the average listener could not understand the content of the program.) When describing life in capitalist countries, in the US in particular, propaganda focused on social issues such as poverty and anti-union action by the government. Workers in capitalist countries were portrayed as "ideologically close". Propaganda claimed rich people from the US derived their income from weapons manufacturing, and claimed that there was substantial racism or neo-fascism in the US. When describing life in Communist countries, western propaganda sought to depict an image of a citizenry held captive by governments that brainwash them. The West also created a fear of the East, by depicting an aggressive Soviet Union. In the Americas, Cuba served as a major source and a target of propaganda from both black and white stations operated by the CIA and Cuban exile groups. Radio Habana Cuba, in turn, broadcast original programming, relayed Radio Moscow, and broadcast The Voice of Vietnam as well as alleged confessions from the crew of the USS Pueblo. George Orwell's novels Animal Farm and Nineteen Eighty-Four are virtual textbooks on the use of propaganda. Though not set in the Soviet Union, these books are about totalitarian regimes that constantly corrupt language for political purposes. These novels were, ironically, used for explicit propaganda. The CIA, for example, secretly commissioned an animated film adaptation of Animal Farm in the 1950s with small changes to the original story to suit its own needs. The United States and Iraq both employed propaganda during the Iraq War. The United States established campaigns towards the American people on the justifications of the war while using similar tactics to bring down Saddam Hussein's government in Iraq. The extent to which the US government was guilty of propaganda aimed at its own people is a matter of discussion. The book Selling Intervention & War by Jon Western argued that president Bush was "selling the war" to the public. President George W. Bush gave a talk at the Athena Performing Arts Center at Greece Athena Middle and High School Tuesday, May 24, 2005 in Rochester, NY. About half way through the event Bush said, "See in my line of work you got to keep repeating things over and over and over again for the truth to sink in, to kind of catapult the propaganda." People had their initial reactions to the War on Terror, but with more biased and persuading information, Iraq as a whole has been negatively targeted. America's goal was to remove Saddam Hussein's power in Iraq with allegations of possible weapons of mass destruction related to Osama Bin Laden. Video and picture coverage in the news has shown shocking and disturbing images of torture and other evils being done under the Iraqi Government. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Propaganda

The Who - Won't Get Fooled Again

This is Track 09 of the Who's album - Who's next. First recorded (then rejected) in New York on March 16, 1971, this became the first song to be worked on with Glyn Johns during a trial session at Stargroves with The Rolling Stones Mobile studio in April, 1971. This version (unlike the New York original) used the synthesizer track from Pete's demo and was edited down for the single which reached #9 in the UK and #15 in the USA. Played onstage at the Young Vic and retained at every Who concert thereafter.
